Webm is such a pain to encode, but if you do it right the results are SO good. Blows .x264 out of the water imo

I mean, webm is just the file container. I wouldn’t be surprised if VP9 is a better codec than x264 but that’s only because it’s meant to compete against x265/HEVC.

Against VP8, x264 still has the advantage. However, regardless of codec choice, they’re still a hell of a lot better than any fucking .gif.

I disagree that vp8 is worse than x264, my job used to be working at a video encoding software company and I did a lot of exhaustive testing with those two and if done right VP8 works over x264 or main concept or any other 264 codec.

I don’t do a lot of encoding unless necessary (I usually just remux files with MKVtoolnix) but I was rather underwhelmed with VP8 when Google first announced it and VP9 fixed a lot of it.

I’ll defer to your greater experience, but in my anecdotal experience, I only ever used VP8 due to being “part and parcel” of webms, of which I’ve made quite a few. That and VP9 takes FUCKING GOD DAMN FOREVER to encode, just like x265.

yeah, vp8 shipped with some crap stock encoding parameters but once you dial it in, its not as slow and the quality is amazing. The macroblocking and intraframe interpolation was lightyears ahead of 264.
